The 2018 World Cup is about to kick off and the Three Lions are getting ready to roar …
It’s a nail-biting time for ever-hopeful England fans, but now one Liverpool bar has created a menu of World Cup cocktails to steady any pre-match nerves.
Aloha, the Hawaiian-themed tiki bar on Colquitt Street, is pretty neutral since Hawaii didn’t qualify for the tournament (they may not actually have a national football team!), so obviously it’s cheering on England.
Starting on Thursday, with the opening ceremony, and running right through to the final, Aloha’s bartenders will be serving up special footy-inspired drinks at just £5 each.
The mixologists chose seven of their favourite teams and then paired up some more unusual combinations to give fans something new to try.
Reds stars Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the rest of the England lads, get one in their honour obviously – the Motherland Ruin which combines Beefeater gin with crème de peche, agave, lime juice, mint and Ting.
Rivals Germany get a Surfin’ On Success which is hard to beat, made with Jagermeister, Malibu passion fruit, mango juice, lime juice and tropical Red Bull. And bookies’ favourites Brazil have a typically tricky and tropical Favela Juice with cachaça, banane, velvet falernum, lime juice, a hint of vanilla and apple juice.
There’s also an Olmeca Silver tequila-based Dark Horse for Mexico, a Red Card for Portugal (that’s one for Ronaldo!) made with Bacardi Oakheart, a cheeky Polonium Sweet Tooth which combines vodka, blue curacao and cranberry juice for hosts Russia and a Stormy Canals for outsiders Panama, made with Havana Club 7-year-old rum.
At the end of the month – when England have lifted the trophy, of course – Aloha will ask guests for their cocktail winner and the most popular will become a permanent fixture.
