Spectacular event is UK’s biggest festive 5K fun run

The 14th annual Liverpool Santa Dash takes place this Sunday (3 December), when more than 7,000 red, blue and mini Santas will pull on their trainers to take part in the UK’s biggest festive 5K run.

There is now just one day left to register for the Radio City Liverpool Santa Dash, in association with Arriva Bus.

Final registrations will be taken at the BTR Santa Dash pop-up shop in St Johns Shopping Centre on Saturday (2 December). No entries will be taken on Santa Dash day.

The Liverpool Santa Dash extravaganza is back for its 14th consecutive year, and the festive spectacular is highly regarded as the city’s kick-start to Christmas.

The race is now on to make the Radio City Liverpool Santa Dash, in association with Arriva Bus, the biggest and best yet. This year’s event is also supported by SP Energy Networks and St Johns Shopping Centre Liverpool.

Special guests taking part in this year’s Liverpool Santa Dash include the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Malcolm Kennedy – who will swap his Mayoral robes for a red Santa suit.

The Lord Mayor will be joined by Liverpool Football Club’s European Cup legend Alan Kennedy, who is a regular at the festive event.

Fundraiser and Everton fans’ favourite, Speedo Mick, will be braving the cold weather in his usual speedo attire to take part and collect a blue Santa Dash medal.

A small group of ever present Santas, who have taken part in every Santa Dash event to date, will again be back to take part for the 14th year and collect the next medal in their Santa Dash collection.

The Kearon family, who live in Wirral and Ireland, are taking part – a family group who cover four generations. This is the first time all seven members of the family will be coming together to take part.

Claire House Children’s Hospice, which has bases in Wirral and Liverpool, is the official charity for the Liverpool Santa Dash 2017.

Sophie Chilvers, Running and Challenge Fundraiser at Claire House, said:

“We’re thrilled to be the charity partner for the Liverpool Santa Dash. Laughter, positivity and care are what Claire House is all about, so dressing as Santa and running through Liverpool city centre is the perfect way to raise vital funds and make this Christmas magical for all the children and families we support.”

Santa Dash organisers BTR Liverpool has today (Friday, 1 December) announced that event sponsor Arriva North West is offering Santa Dash participants free travel on Arriva services throughout Santa Dash day across Merseyside if they are wearing their Santa suit and race number.

BTR Race Director Alan Rothwell commented:

“A big thank you to Arriva North West for their very kind gesture in supporting the Liverpool Santa Dash with complimentary travel for our Santas.

“We staged the very first Liverpool Santa Dash in 2004, and little did we realise back then that so many people would take the festive fun run into their hearts. It’s a really special day for everyone involved – the smiles on everyone’s faces says it all.”

The Liverpool Santa Dash starts at 9.30am from Pier Head Liverpool. The route takes Santas through the city centre and over the Churchill fly-over. Katumba drumming band will entertain Santas as they arrive in Dale Street. Festive characters and guaranteed snow await participants as they cross the finish line at Liverpool Town Hall.

Youngsters aged 12 and under even have their own 1K Mini Dash. This starts in Castle Street at approximately 11am after the Santa Dash.

The Radio City Liverpool Santa Dash is organised and delivered by BTR Liverpool, whose Race Director Alan Rothwell created the event in 2004. Three years later, the event expanded in 2007 to include the 1K Mini Dash, followed by the introduction of blue Santa suits by public demand in 2010.

The BTR portfolio also includes the Wirral Half Marathon and 10K; Port Sunlight 10K and 5K; 52-mile Tour Of Merseyside; and the Liverpool Half Marathon which celebrates its 25-year milestone event on 25 March 2018.

The festive fun continues at St Johns Shopping Centre next Thursday (7 December) with a fundraising Santa Conga. Dashing Santas are being encouraged to hold onto their red and blue Santa suits and join the Santa Conga, which starts at 6pm in Roe Street (next to Matalan).

Christmas jumpers are encouraged for those who don’t have Santa suits. Conga participants are invited to donate £1 to Claire House Children’s Hospice. Register in advance at the St Johns Shopping Centre office, located on the upper level.
